Giving to Redemption Church
One of the ways in which our regular members of Redemption Church are involved with caring for each other and extending the Kingdom of God is by prayerfully providing regular, committed and generous financial support to the Church. As an independent church our ministry is fully funded by the people who regularly attend our Church and give of their time and money.
Who Should Give
We believe it is the responsibility of our regular members to contribute financially to the ministry at Redemption Church. We are also very thankful for a number of previous members and long-time supporters of Redemption church that continue to give generously to our ministry – these continued donations are much needed and appreciated.
If you are a new visitor to our Church, please do not feel obliged to give financially, we are just happy to have you come along.
A Theology of Giving
It is important as Christians to consider our motivations for giving financially, and to help us answer questions like:
- Who should I give my money to?
- How much money should I give?
- How often should I give?
Here is a very short theology of New Testament Christian giving from the bible.
Christian Giving is Thankful
Thanks be to God for his inexpressible gift! – 2 Corinthians 9:15
Christians give because we are responding with thankful hearts to God who himself has given us the most precious gift – the gift of his Son Jesus.
Christian Giving is based on Generous Grace NOT Law.
Each one must give as he has decided in his heart, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver – 2 Corinthians 9:7
Tithing (the practice of giving 10%) is an Old Testament practice. The New Testament standard for Christian giving is based on a principle of cheerful generosity. God does not tell us exactly how much to give, because we are not to give begrudgingly, only each person can decide for themself what they can give without begrudging the amount given. Secondly, giving set amounts can lead to a self-righteous attitude towards giving (believing that you have fulfilled your requirements to God). Rather, Christian giving is designed to be extravagantly gracious, in the same way God was extravagant in his giving when he gave us salvation through the death of his Son.
Christian Giving is Sacrificial
Sell your possessions, and give to the needy – Luke 12:33
The Christian life is self-sacrificial. In the same way Jesus gave his life, as disciples of Jesus, we are also called to make sacrifices. In this manner, Christians give their money sacrificially, not with the expectation that God will give their money back with interest – that is greed. We have already received an inheritance from God that will last forever. This knowledge frees us from hoarding money and enables us to give to others who are in need.
Christians are Responsible for Other Christians
This service that you perform is not only supplying the needs of the Lord’s people but is also overflowing in many expressions of thanks to God. – 2 Corinthians 9:12
The New Testament is clear that one of our primary responsibilities as a Christians, is to love other Christians. This responsibility includes meeting their financial needs where they might exist. In this sense, three ways in which Christians in the bible gave include; (i) giving to poor or suffering Christians (ii) paying to support elders, pastors and church workers; (iii) giving to those who are working to plant new churches and spread the gospel message of Jesus. These areas should receive priority in Christian giving.
